Tips For Choosing A Domain Name

It can be hard to know where to start when choosing your business domain. Our top tip for you is to keep it short and keep it simple. If you try to get clever with your domain name you may have some issues with typos or people just forget your domain because it isn’t simple enough.

For your target audience to find your website, they need to be able to remember your website address easily. This way they can easily type your domain name into their browser and quickly find your website.

We would recommend that you aim to register the shortest name you can, that your target audience will associate with your business and your website.

Should I Go For .co.uk, .com, .net Or Something Else?

Many businesses chose to register several domain names that are similar. This is a really good idea if you own a trademark for a certain name. By registering your domain name with .co.uk, .uk, .com and .net you are registering the most popular domain names. This will prevent potential cybersquaters and reduce the risk of lost traffic too. If your business does get very large, it will also stop your competition taking these versions of your domain name and stealing your potential clients with your domain name.

Check For Typos

Firstly, check you haven’t made any typos in your domain name before registering it. This is really important. However, you also need to check there are any typos that could be made by other people. Check for words your target audience may think are pluralised too. Make your domain name as clear and easy to spell as possible.

It Shouldn’t Cost The Earth

If the cost for a domain name seems expensive, it probably is. We have heard some real horror stories of companies selling domain names for as much as £100 per year. This is lots more than a single domain name should cost.

Register Your Chosen Domain Name Soon

When you have chosen the right domain name for your business, make sure you register it as quickly as possible. Some businesses, not our clients, have chosen the domain name and not registered it straight away. They have gone off and asked for opinions, designed the logo and created a website. When they come back to register the domain name it’s gone. You don’t need a website already to have a domain name, you don’t even need a web master. When you find the domain name you like, get it registered quickly.
