The world of web hosting can be a new and scary world for lots of people. This is especially the case when you are running your own business. Bandwidth
This term is used by web hosts to describe the amount of data that can pass from the server your website is hosted on to the people visiting your website. The bandwidth will include files that makes up your website. It will also include any data downloaded from databases or media files.
Domain Name
Your domain name is your URL. It’s the name of your website.
Subdomain Names
The subdomain names are the part of your parent name. They are free to set and can be useful if you have different areas of your site that are better categorised. An example would be dictionary.domain.com or thesaurus.domaon.com.
HTML
HTML stands for Hyper Text Mark-Up Language. Put simply it is the first layer of a web page. It deals with the content. This an include any text, lists, tables and quotes for example.
FTP
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. When you’re ready to see what your website looks like online, uploading the files to your website is as simple as clicking, dragging and dropping. This process if known as FTP.
MySQL
MySQL is the worlds most popular open source database and it’s owned and developed by Sun Microsystems. It is also part of the open source software stack known as LAMP. This stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.
Top Level Domains
Top level domains have no association with any countries, unlike ‘.co.uk’ for example. Amongst the first top level domains to be created were .com, .net. and .org.
Web Space
The amount of space that is allocated to your website by a web host is your web space. This is where all your files and data are stored. Generally speaking, the web space you have the more information you can store.
